Create Your Own Custom Icons in OS X 10.7.5 or Later Tuesday, February 17th, 2015 Author: OWC Chris S. I’ve been making my own Mac icons for folders, applications, and a myriad of other uses for well over 20 years now. IconsDB.com currently has 4164 icons in the database that you can customize and download in any color and any size you want! 502,717,602 icon downloads and counting! 2688 icons can be used freely in both personal and commercial projects with no attribution required, but always appreciated and 1476 icons require a link to be used. Mac OS X: Customizing application icons in OS X is an extremely easy process. Simple drag and drop will usually do, but for more integrated applications and system files there are a few quick.
Creating personalized icons can make your computer desktop unique. Step Create your own image in any image manipulation program that can save files with a.PNG file extension. Most image programs can do this. You can also use a pre-made image file in your imaging program by clicking 'File' on the toolbar at the top of the program window. In the File drop-down menu, click 'Open.' Browse through the files on your computer until you locate the one that you wish to use and then click 'Open' on the bottom right of the Browse window. Step Save your image as a.PNG file by clicking the menu option labeled 'Save As' in the 'File' drop-down menu.
In the Save As window, find the folder that you want to save your image to and open it. In the 'File name' text box, type the name that you wish your image to have.
Click on the box labeled 'Save as type' and select 'PNG' or 'Portable Network Graphic' in the drop-down menu that appears. Step Go to a website that is made to convert image files into an.ICO file type. There are several websites available where you can do this conversion for free very simply. Often used websites include convertico.com, converticon.com and iconverticons.com (see References).
Click 'Browse' and then, in the Browse window that appears, find the.PNG image file that you just created. Select it and click 'Open.' Step Click the 'Convert' button. The website will then save the.PNG image file as a file with a.ICO file extension. Some icon conversion websites upload the file to the Internet first in order to convert it.

When using a website that works this way, the website will prompt you to download the newly-converted.ICO back onto your computer. You will have to do this before using it.
[Mac only] The folder icons on your Mac have been in use for ages, and it doesn’t help with searches if you have many folders in your Finder, especially when you have forgotten the folder name. There are a number of ways to view folders in Finder: you can sort and show item by icons, list, column and cover folder, but we have another idea. There is a simple action you can do on your Mac to change the image of your Folder icon.
Instead of looking at the same boring blue folder icons, you can select any of your favorite images to turn it into your folder icon. This way, it will be way easier to tell your folders apart.
Lets find out how to start customizing your folder icons. Recommended Reading: Replace Folder Icon with image There are only three simple steps to changing your folder icon to any of your favorite images. • Select any folder of choice and press Cmd + I to open the folder info panel. You can also open the info panel by option-clicking on the selected folder and selecting Get Info. • Now open any images you want to use; you can open it with Preview, then press Cmd + A to select and Cmd + C to copy the image. • Point your cursor and click on the folder image at the top left corner of the folder info panel you open earlier, then press Cmd + V to paste the image.
Once you have, your folder icon will now change to the image you pasted earlier. Now you already have a new look for your folder icon. To remove this image, simply click on the image at the top left corner of the info panel and press Delete Conclusion With this simple trick, you can start reorganizing your folders on your Mac so it’s easier for you to spot which folder to look into when you are looking for something.
Tuesday, February 17th, 2015 Author: I’ve been making my own Mac icons for folders, applications, and a myriad of other uses for well over 20 years now. Back then, I was stuck with 256 (or fewer) colors, a black/white alpha channel, and pretty much had to make them pixel by pixel in (uphill both ways barefoot in the snow). Later on, I wound up registering a Developer account with Apple so I could use the icon tools in Xcode (well and for AppleScript Studio, but that’s a different story), and probably tried a half-dozen different freeware or shareware utilities over the years. Some worked well, and others not-so-well.
