In order to use a different drive you had to patch the system so that the new drive would be recognised as a burner - that said, it should just work as a player/CD-ROM. The later Macs didn't have this problem and you could stick a drive in and it would be recognised straight away as a burner. However depending on your bios your machine can fail to burn DVDs if your bios can not recognise that output. While loading the CD that comes with the DVD-RW did you get an error message if yes then it means you BIOS is failing to recognise your DVD-RW as an output method try to update the BIOS.
But before you do that if you can try adding the drive on a modern (after 2002) machine with xp and see if it can burn DVDs there without adding any drivers. If it fails on that other machine then you can be sure its not your BIOS but a problem with drive (which I suspect most actually). But if it works then then you need to update your machine bios. There is the cable to the motherboard, CPU load, memory load, Video card being used etc.

If the drive is connected to another DVD/CD drive on the same cable, try unplugging it first and see if it improves. Also if it is running on the same cable as a hard drive, your main hard drive in particular, then try to get it onto it's own cable. Check the software running it is not in software mode using it's particular config section within the program as well. Check your SATA connection. HERE'S HOW I FIXED MINE. Computer tries to install driver for BD burner, but ultimately fails, and gives the message. 'Unsuccessful' and/or 'Microsoft Windows stopped device. Error 43') The SATA CONNECTION on my BD burner's EXTERNAL CASE had gone bad. I used a SATA/IDE to USB Adapter Cable I bought for about $10 on amazon.
• I unscrewed the external case to get at the internal drive, and plugged the SATA adapter cable directly into the internal BD burner drive (bypassing the case assembly), and plugged the other end into my computer USB port. • PS My BD burner POWER was working OK, so I left the big white 4pin power adapter connected to the original external case. Both my laptop and my desktop PC recognized the LG BD burner again and assigned it a drive letter (like it used to do). • Now I either need to (1) Buy a NEW EXTERNAL case ($10 - $30), (2) install it as an internal drive (could get problematic if 'ANYDVD' is installed) or (3) just leave it connected via the cheap adapter cable. It's super EASY (& inexpensive) to TEST this before spending $$$$ on a new equipment. Hope this helps someone. It had me miffed for a while there.
