So I've got the devices set up in DEP and they're all populating into my Meraki MDM network which is nice. However, the majority of our devices were already out in the field. The new devices, we should be able to capture and fully manage/supervise them. Its just a matter of training my helpdesk guys to go through the appropriate process. Something happened recently that prompted the need to look into the configuration of MDM. The iOS 11 update did something weird and re-enabled the local mail app and devices that were using a shared Apple ID (over 100 devices, what a mess) all started using the same e-mail address in the 'reply' field.
I don't know if that's a 100% accurate description of the problem we're having but it affected a number of people. I think we're going to enable the setting to prevent users from updating the phone on their own as well. I haven't actually worked with the MDM solution nor used Apple products for a while, take what I say in that context. My advice is more generic; the process should be the same in terms of getting data off and back on as during a phone upgrade. At least, that's how I would accomplish such an upgrade, but the key point in my mind is to use tools that you know work without being tied to the specific install.

Why not have everyone turn on Apple iCloud photos so they are available when they log back into their account after a restore. I'm pretty sure I remember reading that you can apply an Apple supervision profile through Meraki SM via DEP, perform the restore, restore the users backup and it should remain supervised. Apple do not recommend this but supposedly it works, further research required. So, the only problem AT THE MOMENT is that a good number of the phones that are out in the wild were issued with one of two Apple IDs that were in use long before I got here. It's a really beautiful mess haha. At times, people will see text messages or pictures or missed calls not intended for them. Obviously a major issue but for some reason they continued this method for some time.
Once we got the MDM deployed, I allowed for people to use their own Apple IDs. Seems cleaner/better this way for me. I will have to try the factory reset, supervising, then allowing a restore. This is true, mostly.
All my phones are DEP for the last year, but just recently, I got one phone back and while Meraki dashboard said I could remove the icloud lock, it wouldn't actually work. Apple Enterprise support confirmed that all the config was correct, and the process was right, but couldn't help, Meraki just said it wasn't their issue, that they were sending the right command to Apple but Apple was rejecting it. In the end, I did it the old way.

We are also pushing the teamviewer quicksupport app, and with IOS 11 we can use live screen sharing (though the setup to get this to work is probably harder than explaining how to fix the original problem).
