Mostly death metal. I use it to boost. Classic settings of gain 0ff-9o clock, level full, tone noon. Doesnt have a bunch of features other than the extra mid knob so it gets a 6. Quality gets a ding due to cheap feeling knobs unlike the ts9, everything else is rock solid on it. I personally LOVE this pedal. Its a tubescreamer with a bit more gain and the extra mid knob which to my ears brings out some high mids really allowing you to push your tone out front, or turning it down to emphasize some lower mids.
If using this as your main dirt sound on a clean amp you can get a good judas priest kind of sound. Better than the original ts9 due to its versatility imo of course. Meraki and managed software center for mac. Just unboxed it. Only played with it for a little bit but my first impression is good. To me, at most settings it sounds like a tube screamer. Though, it has more gain and a very sensitive midrange control. The midrange knob does a lot. It can take the tone from scooped (anything below 12 o'clock becomes less TS-like, more scooped, and gritty) to actually having more midrange than a typical TS.
Lots of volume on tap. Seems to have as much drive as a Keeley TS. The flatter or scooped settings seem to work well as medium gain rhythm overdrive/soft-distortion. For $89, this seems like a good deal. The JD9 may become my go to blues pedal. Also, I looked at the inside and it has the JRC4558 opamp we all love.
And FWIW, with my rig, this pedal sounds a lot different to me than the ad Ibanez put on youtube.
